25 best laptops 2014: What's the best laptop you can buy in the UK?

'What is the best laptop?' is a question we get asked all the time, so in an attempt to answer that question, here is our list of the best laptops avaialble to buy in 2014. (Read more laptops buying advice here - you may also want to read our piece about the most reliable laptop makers).

Buying a laptop is a personal decision. Although we've ranked our list of the best laptops available to buy in 2014 below, the best laptop for you will depend on your priorities: there is no one-size-fits-all.

Some people want a large screen, other people want the ultimate portability, while performance is the key ingredient for yet others.

There's even the choice of operating system. Windows 8 is now the default OS on new laptops (you can use it just like Windows 7, so don't let the new interface put you off ' see our ).

If money is no object, you'll also have the choice of Mac OS on an Apple MacBook. Some say MacBooks aren't laptops, but that's nonsense. You'll pay a lot less for the equivalent Windows laptop, but you won't get a stylish and sturdy aluminium body, nor the great-quality screen ' few Windows laptops use top-quality IPS displays, instead saving money by compromising on TN-based screens, which have narrower viewing angles and, in general, poorer colour accuracy.

The 25 best laptops 2014: Screen

Screen sizes range from around 11 inches up to 17 inches. If you're replacing an older PC with a laptop to use at home, you might benefit from the bigger screen, keyboard and trackpad.

Don't overlook resolution. Most laptops have a screen with 1366x768 pixels, with only a few offering Full HD 1920x1080, or higher resolutions. More pixels is almost always better, but on smaller screen sizes, more pixels means everything looks smaller, including Windows text and icons.

The 25 best laptops 2014: Storage

It's easy to confuse memory with the hard drive. Documents, programs and other files are stored on the hard drive (or SSD), so look for at least 500GB if you want to carry around with you your photos, music and video libraries.

Memory is where programs and files are stored only while you're using them, and more is better. Consider 3GB an absolute minimum.
SSDs are solid-state drives. They're faster than hard drives and make any laptop feel a lot faster. The bad news is that they're much more expensive, so you'll typically find 128GB or 256GB instead of 500GB or 1TB (1,000GB). Most laptops don't have space for both an SSD and hard drive, so you'll have to choose between the two types. A compromise is a small amount of on-board solid-state storage and large hard drive, but we've found you need at least a 32GB SSD to make a difference in Windows.

The 25 best laptops 2014: Processor

Unless you're planning to run very demanding software, you won't need the latest and greatest processor. It is wise, however, to shop around and get good value. We recommend an Intel Core i5 as the best compromise between cost and performance. Some may find a Core i3 too slow, but a Core i7 is usually overkill.

AMD processors tend to be found on budget laptops and are fine as long as you're not expecting earth-shattering speed.
If you want to play 3D games, look for a laptop with an Nvidia or AMD graphics card. You will have to pay extra, and don't expect a budget laptop (anything under '500-600) to be able to run the latest 3D games.

The good news is that all the laptops here are models we recommend: there isn't a duff one among them. It's important to read through the full review before spending your hard-earned cash, too, because no laptop is perfect in every respect. Whether any flaws are acceptable compromises or not will depend on your priorities. Our reviews detail the quality of each laptop's screen, keyboard and touchpad as well as listing the specifications.

Finally, don't forget about battery life and warranty cover: they do vary from model to model and manufacturer to manufacturer. Some retailers provide extra warranty cover, so it might be worth shopping at, say, John Lewis, rather than saving a few quid buy choosing the cheapest price you can find online.

It's also worth considering whether a laptop is indeed what you want. You can get some great bargains on  these days, and some tablets offer similar functionality to basic laptops. See our piece about , for instance.

Nexus 9 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 comparison review: Cheaper and feature-packed Tab S nips Nexus 9

Google has launched the with some help from HTC but how does it stand up to Samsung's impressive Galaxy Tab S 8.4? Find out in our Nexus 9 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 comparison review. Also see: .

Nexus 9 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4: Price UK

Since Apple launched the iPad mini at £319, it's become a semi-standard price for of this size. Samsung initially announced a higher price for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 but quickly dropped it to match. Google has opted to mirror its rivals with the Nexus 9 which means a price jump from the . :

£319 is the starting price but you can add £80 for 4G cellular data on the Samsung and £60 on the Nexus 9 but 4G is only available on the 32 GB model. See the table below for full pricing.

Those are the official prices but because the has been on the market for a while, you can get it cheaper. Amazon has as cheap as £249 if you don't mind the white model – the bronze one is £275. It also has the 4G model for as little at £319 (in white, again). The Nexus 9 is unlikely to drop in price.

Nexus 9 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4: Design and build

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.4 comes in Titanium Bronze or Dazzling White while the Nexus is available in Indigo Black, Lunar White and Sand – you can take your pick. Read: .

With a smaller screen, the Tab S 8.4 is understandably a more compact and lighter tablet. It's just 294 g compared to the Nexus 9's 425 g which is quite a big difference. It's also impressively thin at just 6.6 mm making it one of the thinnest money can buy. The Nexus 9 is a bit chunkier at 7.95 mm.

Both use a plastic rear cover and the Nexus 9 certainly looks and feels more stylish. We're not keen on the spotted back of the Tab S with the holes ready for an optional case. The Nexus 9 also has a brushed metal frame and although its rival looks like it has a similar design, Samsung refused to confirm it is actually metal so we're assuming it's not.

Nexus 9 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4: Hardware and performance

Screen

As we've mentioned Samsung uses a smaller screen by half and inch – 8.4in vs 8.9in. There's also a difference in aspect ratio as the Tab S offers 16:10 while Google has followed Apple's lead with 4:3.

Both have impressive resolutions with Samsung's at 2560 x 1600 and Google's at 2048x1536. If you're quick at mental arithmetic then you'll know this means the Tab S wins the pixel density-off with 359ppi which is the highest we've seen on a tablet but the Nexus 9's is still good at 287ppi.

The Samsung display is the best for content consumption although the eye popping AMOLED technology isn't for everyone. With the 4:3 aspect ratio, the Nexus 9 is the better all-rounder and is more suited to work – especially when you factor in the optional Keyboard Folio case, even if it does cost £110.

Processor, memory and benchmarks

Under the hood of the Tab S 8.4 is Samsung's own Eynos 5 Octa-core chip, which pairs four 1.9GHz cores with four 1.3GHz cores. There's also a whopping 3 GB of RAM.

The Nexus 9 is one of the first devices with an Nvidia Tegra K1, a 64-bit chip listed at 2.3 GHz but shown to be running at 2.5GHz in GeekBench 3. Google has opted for 2GB of RAM.

Both are speedy tablets from a user perspective but we saw occasional lag from the Tab S and this is reflected in the benchmark results where Nexus 9 took all the honours. See below for the results.

Storage

As we mentioned briefly earlier, the Tab S 8.4 was supposed to come in 16- and 32 GB models but we can't find the larger size anywhere (let us know in the comments if you've seen it). Its saving grace is a microSD card slot which can take up to 128 GB which the Nexus 9 doesn't have. Google's tablet is definitely available in 16- or 32 GB and bear in mind you'll have to get the latter if you want 3G/4G connectivity.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 screen

Wireless and unique features

It's no surprise to see 11ac dual-band Wi-Fi and GPS on both tablets but things are different elsewhere.

The Nexus 9 has NFC and Bluetooth 4.1 with aptX while the Tab S is on older Bluetooth 4.0 and doesn't have NFC. However, it does have things which its rival is lacking including a fingerprint scanner and IR blaster.

Both offer stereo speakers which is good to see but the Nexus 9's are properly front facing where the Tab S 8.4's are located on the sides.

Google's unique feature is really offering stock Android 5.0 Lollipop which we'll talk about below in the software section.

Nexus 9 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4: Battery life

Neither tablet has a removable battery but it's the Nexus 9 which proved the best in our video loop test lasting a whopping 11 hours. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 will still go a decent distance at nine hours but that's a little off Samsung's claim of 12 hours.

The difference is partly down to the components but mostly the Nexus 9's capacity of 6700 mAh compared to 4900 mAh. That extra weight might be worth it if you need better battery life.

Nexus 9 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4: Cameras

Photography isn't as important on a tablet compared to a smartphone but you may be interested nevertheless. Things are closely matched at the rear with both tablets wielding an 8 Mp camera with LED flash and the ability to shoot video in up to 1080p quality. At the front, the Galaxy Tab S comes out on top with a 2.1 Mp compared to the Nexus 9's 1.6 Mp.

Nexus 9 Android 5.0 Lollipop

Nexus 9 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4: Software

As we said already, one of the key features of the Nexus 9 is that is comes with stock Android 5.0 Lollipop which is the latest version. Google has launched it on the tablet along with the Nexus 6 smartphone.

Lollipop runs silky smooth on the Nexus 9, has the new Material Design and plenty of new features. We love it and you can read more about it in our full Lollipop review and Top 10 Android Lollipop tips, tricks and hidden features.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 comes with Android 4.4 KitKat and Samsung's own TouchWiz user interface. It is likely to be updated to Lollipop at some stage but it will remain a different experience to the Nexus 9 due to Samsung's modifications.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 software

TouchWiz has advantages like the ability to run two apps side-by-side and the pop-up recent apps menu. It's a little over complex though and features like Magazine UX, Papergarden, Kick and SideSync may be of no use to you so simply waste storage. We suspect it's Samsung's software which is causing the tablet to be laggy.

Luckily, you can install the Google Now launcher on the Tab S giving it the plain Android look, although it hasn't been updated with the Lollipop style yet. Overall we prefer the simplicity and style of vanilla Android over TouchWiz but it's a personal decision.

Xero review

Founded in 2006 by two entrepreneurs in New Zealand, Xero now claims more than 200,000 users in over 100 countries. Xero bills itself as the ideal solution for modern SMEs offering online software for accountants in practice and for small businesses to update and manage business transactions in real time.

An additional , Xero Touch for , , or lets subscribers manage their business while on the go. Simplicity is the watchword with the online accounting package, with the user instantly able to see bank balances, recent sales, money coming in or out, and expense claims on the dashboard.

The dashboard features five other tabs with drop-down menus for the user to manage all aspects of business accounts: Accounts, Reports, Adviser (see later), Contacts and Settings. The Contacts tab is where the user can easily manage customers, suppliers, employees and more; the Settings tab is for managing general settings as well as managing inventory items. Here you can also manage and set-up account codes with simple descriptions for the income and expense accounts.

The Reports tab generates various reports for a user to see at-a-glance how their business is doing in real time – profit and loss reports, balance sheet, age and amount of outstanding debts, and so on. The Accounts tab is for managing business bank accounts, debtor and creditor amounts (with graphical/pictorial analysis), employee pay runs and expense claims, and fixed assets (computer and office equipment, for example).

Some sections have an optional ‘Getting Started’ message explaining briefly what each section is for and how to use it. The best thing about this software is that it boasts many features for different levels of user: keeping it straightforward for the business owner with little experience in managing accounts – but also including functionalities for those with more experience.

It will suit finance-trained entrepreneurs and even bookkeepers and accountants in practice. The Adviser tab contains additional functions for more accounts-experienced types, whereas the inexperienced can leave the accounts management functions under this tab to their bookkeeper or accountant. Indeed, when posting or editing a manual journal, for example, a message helpfully pops up recommending that ‘only your accountant or bookkeeper create journals, unless you have experience managing your general ledger’.

The Adviser section also contains options to fill in and file your VAT return online, create annual accounts to be filed to Companies House, and export general ledger transactions. However, Xero does not have any corporation tax or self-assessment functionalities. Separate tax software would be needed for these, although one can add on certain other services, such as payroll, CRM or inventory management, from one of Xero software developer partner firms.

Prices excluding VAT for the online solution start from £12 per month for the simplest small businesses – freelancers and small property investors, for instance – to £19 per month for most small- and medium-sized businesses Pay £24 per month for small- and medium-sized businesses that bank or transact in foreign currencies. How to transfer photos from computer to iPhone the easy way: use iCloud Control Panel and My Photo Stream

It's possible to upload photos from your PC to your iPhone or iPad - or iPod touch - and the easiest way to do this is to use iCloud. Here we'll explain how to do it.

The typical way to use iCloud is to let it automatically sync photos from your or iPad to your computer, using what Apple calls Photo Stream. Photo Stream holds the last 1,000 photos, but once photos are in the Photo Stream folder within My Pictures on your PC or laptop they aren't deleted, so it's a great way to automatically back up photos from your iOS device without connecting it via a cable to your computer.

However, you can also use the Photo Stream folder along with iCloud Control Panel to send photos from your PC to your iOS device.

In order to use iCloud on Windows, you'll need a piece of software from Apple. Here's

Confusingly, there are two different versions of iCloud Control Panel. If you're running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2, download. If you have Windows 7 or 8, you need the .

When set up, every time you take a photo on your iPhone or iPad, it will be saved to your Photo Stream and uploaded to iCloud, then downloaded to your computer the next time you turn it on.

How to upload photos from your PC to your iPhone

There are  but here we're going to do it using iCloud Control Panel and the Uploads folder within the Photo Stream folder.

Note that if you merely want to import photos from your digital camera without using a computer, you can buy Apple's Camera Connection Kit if your device has the older 30-pin connector, or the Lightning to SD Camera Reader if it has the new dock connector.

(This tutorial assumes you've already installed and configured iCloud Control Panel for Windows as mentioned above)

Step 1. On your computer, open an Explorer window and navigate to the folder in which the pictures you want are stored. Select those you want, right-click on them and choose Copy.

Upload photos to iPhone 1

Step 2. Navigate to the Pictures folder (My Pictures in Windows Vista). Find the Photo Stream folder which is created when you install the iCloud Control Panel, and double-click to view its contents. (Don't click on the Photo Stream shortcut in the Windows Explorer Favourites list as you can't get to the Uploads folder this way.)

Upload photos to iPhone 2

Step 3. Open the Uploads folder within Photo Stream, right-click and Paste your copied photos into this folder.

Upload photos to iPhone 3

Step 4. Your photos will appear in your Photo Stream (within the Photos app) on your iPhone shortly. The Photo Stream is ordered by the date on which the photos were taken, so they may not be easy to find if you already have the maximum of 1,000 pictures in your stream. However, you may find that Windows gives the pasted files today's date, in which case the photos will be at the end of your Photo Stream.

The images below show iOS 6 on the left and iOS 7 on the right. In iOS 7, Photo Stream is called My Photo Stream and is within the Albums section at the bottom.

Photo Stream in iOS 6 and iOS 7

Photos you upload this way can be JPEG, TIFF, PNG and most RAW camera formats.

A common source of confusion is that Photo Stream does not support videos, so you can't upload videos to your iPhone or iPad this way. To add videos to your Camera Roll, use iTunes and sync them using the Photos tab (be sure to tick the Include videos box), or install an app which allows you to add files via File Sharing in iTunes.

The Origin of the Baby New Year

Every year it's the same thing. Some diapered little baby is paraded around wearing a sash with the new year written on it. Who hasn't been to a New Year's Party that ended that way, huh? Okay, me neither. But the Baby New Year is still an iconic image that even popped up in a really bad sequel to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Baby. Usually in concert with the Baby New Year there is also a wizened old man with a ZZ Top beard. But this article isn't about that. It's about that naked baby.

The use of an infant as a symbol of the start of the new cycle that begins with the passage of the year dates back to ancient Greece. The festival of Dionysus, who was the god of wine, song and merriment let us not forget, was a big thing for the Greeks. No doubt the festival of Dionysus often ended long after the womenfolk had been sent to bed and each male reveler had left his male Greek friends behind to unsteadily walk home to the little woman.

Before these parties got down to the good stuff, however, it was the custom of the time to parade a newborn baby around in a basket. The baby was a symbol and a herald for fertility of the crops. (Probably just the crops since Greek style doesn't produce much in the way of offspring.

None so's you want to keep, anyway.) Across that big lake, the Egyptians were also fond of holding a ceremony of rebirth that involved the use of a young baby. In fact, there was a specific ceremonial ritual involving a young man and an older bearded man carrying a baby inside a basket that was discovered on the lid of a sarcophagus that is now on display in a museum.

The symbol of a Baby New Year was ubiquitous throughout the pagan religions so it should come as no surprise that the Catholic Church disallowed it for centuries. Finally, thanks to a fact that Bush seems incapable of grasping---that it is next to impossible to kill an idea that people cleave to with all their might---the Catholic Church gave in and allowed infants to be used in New Year celebrations. Okay, they made one adjustment. The Baby New Year was transformed from a pagan symbol into a symbol of the Baby Christ.

The contemporary image of the Baby New Year comes to us, like the Christmas tree, courtesy of those fun-loving, always-with-the-joke Germans. It was the Germans, you see, who first slapped a diaper on the Baby New Year. The newly diapered Baby New Year first cropped up in German woodcarving illustrations in the 1300s. When the German immigrants poured into Pennsylvania they brought with them the Christmas tree, Groundhog Day and our current image of the Baby New Year.
