Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Price and UK availability

The Sony Xperia Z3 has a £549 RRP, but it'll cost you just £434 SIM-free at . At £549 it was £50 cheaper than the Sony Xperia Z2 that launched this time last year, which kept it in line with its Samsung and HTC rivals and made sense given its minor improvements over its predecessor.

With the Xperia Z4 Sony is expected to put an end to its biannual updates. With just one Sony flagship expected to launch in 2015, we could see that price jump back up to £599.

We're pretty sure the Sony Xperia Z4 will be unveiled at MWC 2015, which begins 2 March 2015, meaning it'll likely go on sale by the end of the month or early April. Some people say it was even being shown behind closed doors at IFA 2015, suggesting it is ready for primetime.

There are rumours that the Z4 will be pushed back for a summer release, allowing it to tie in with the new James Bond film, but we're not convinced.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Design and build

The Sony Xperia Z3 has a very similar design to every other Xperia before it, with the same rectangular shape, boxy corners, rounded edges and front- and rear glass panels. New here is the addition of nylon corners, adding protection from drops, plus a slimmer design that makes it feel less unwieldy in the hand. The 7.3mm Z3 weighs in at 152g. It also came in two new colours - copper and silver green - and features IP68-rated dust- and waterproof protection.

The only major design change we expect to see in the Sony Xperia Z4 is to its screen. Previously a 5.2in full-HD (1920x1080) panel, Sony is now expected to fit a 5.5in Quad-HD (2560x1440) display. This could mean some slimming down of bezels to prevent the Sony Xperia flagship from once again feeling a little bit too big.

Rumour has it we will also see a Dual SIM version of the Sony Xperia Z4, plus a Music variant that the same hi-res audio support, but with a slightly reduced spec and an S-Force PRO Front surround speaker with S-Master digital amplifier technology.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Hardware and performance

A 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chip, Adreno 330 graphics and 3GB of RAM allowed the Sony Xperia Z3 to fare very well in our benchmarks last September. We saw 2805 points in Geekbench 3.0, 29fps in GFXBench 3.0 T-Rex and 804ms in SunSpider. Also see:

Things are about to get a lot faster with the Sony Xperia Z4, whose 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor will run Android Lollipop out of the box. Rumour has it the Z4's chip will be clocked at 2.8GHz and paired with a massive 4GB of RAM and Adreno 430 graphics. Performance will be blisteringly fast.

Storage also gets a bump, and whereas the Sony Xperia Z3 has 16GB as standard the Z4 will have 32GB. Both phones' storage can be expanded by up to 128GB via microSD.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Cameras

Sony's Xperia Z3 came with a 20.7Mp rear camera and a 2.2Mp front camera. Sony has reportedly upgraded the still-20.7Mp rear camera, but boosted the front snapper to 5Mp - perfect for selfies and video chat. Things might not have changed much in this department, at least on paper, but one could argue that it doesn't need to.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Connectivity

Not much is changing on the connectivity front. You'll get the latest 4G and Bluetooth connectivity, plus support for NFC, DLNA, GPS, PS4 Remote Play and more, but the Xperia Z-series flagship will still lack high-end features seen in its rivals such as a fingerprint scanner and wireless charging.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Software

Whereas the Sony Xperia Z3 runs Android KitKat out of the box and the Z4 will run Lollipop, the older handset will be upgraded to Google's latest OS. When this happens the software on each phone will be identical.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Battery life

Sony's Xperia Z3 features a 3100mAh battery, and the company claims a battery life of two days or even more with the Stamina ultra-power-saving mode switched on. We don't yet know the battery capacity of the Sony Xperia Z4, but it will feature the same Stamina power-saving mode.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Verdict

It's impossible to reach a verdict until we have seen the Sony Xperia Z4 in the flesh, but from the sounds of it we'll get a significantly better screen and much improved performance. Will that be enough to make you upgrade? We'll have to wait and see.
